Buying In Bulk

I finally received my Azure Standard order.  For those of you who are not familiar with Azure Standard, they specialize in bulk, natural, and organic foods and products.  You sign up (for free) and can order online.  They have several truck routes that stop at drop points where you pick your order up.  You can read more about the company and how to order on their website, Azure Standard.  My favorite thing is their selection of grains and natural cleaning products.

This month I ordered some new things to use in the kitchen.  Sorghum (Milo), Rye flour, and lentils.  Not sure what I am going to make with them, but they looked good and were a great price.  I also bought some more spices and some organic onions and potatoes.  My favorite buy, however, was the 25 pounds of oats.  I am just giddy with the thought of oatmeal cake, pancakes, meatloaf, cookies, breads... yum!  I guess I didn't know what 25 pounds of oatmeal would look like, so I was surprised at the size of the bag.  It will be interesting to see how long this will last.  If you are wondering what I paid for this big 'ol bag of oats, it was $13.80, not including the shipping costs.  At my local Wally World, the average price is $2.24 for 42 oz.  To buy 25 lbs. at this price would cost about $21.33.

How am I going to store this you ask?  I am going to put it unopened in my deep freeze for about a week.  Then I will seal it (still unopened) in a food grade plastic bucket.  Freezing will kill anything that may be trying to live in it, and sealing it will keep everything else out.  This is the same process that I used to store all that flour I bought awhile back.
