It's So Hot Out!!

We have already had several days that got up to 105 degrees.  I don't know about you, but I am so not ready for that kind of heat.   To help beat the heat, I have compiled a list of tips and tricks that really seem to help keep the house and yourself cooler.  These are great for people without air conditioning or those who wish to conserve energy and not run it.  I kept my air off and was able to maintain a temp of about 82 degrees inside.  To some that would be way too hot, but it's a lot cooler than the outside temperature.

1)  This is pretty simple, stay hydrated.  I go through about a pitcher of iced tea a day.  It's amazing what just sitting still in the shade with a cool drink can do.
2)  In the evenings, open your windows to allow cool air to circulate through the house.  When the sun comes out in the morning, shut the windows up tight, and close the curtains.  Keep everything closed up until it's hotter inside than out.  I recommend investing in some insulated curtains.  They have significantly reduced the cost of heating in the winter and help keep out heat in the summer.
3)  Invest in an attic fan and foil radiant barrier.  Make sure that heat can escape outside so it doesn't heat up your house.
4)  In the evening open your cupboard doors to allow air to circulate.  I noticed that every time I opened a cupboard along the outside wall, I could feel heat escaping.  Every little bit helps right?
5)  Ceiling fans are great, but they are only useful if you are there to feel the breeze.  Save energy and remember to turn them off when you leave the room.
6)  When all else fails, head to the lake.  Swimming is great exercise and the perfect way to cool down!

  1. Wow. 105. I have had lung issues the past couple of years, and they cant handle the heat! We were up to 95 the other day and THAT was rough.

Great list! And I never thought about the cupboards! I will try that when it gets warm again here. I have been cold all day. I think it's in the low 70's.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I love hearing from my readers.
