Off-Grid Challenge Week 5

Before I start in on my challenge, I thought that I would give an update as to how we have been doing with the past challenges.  I am still washing dishes by hand, and since I have refused to have one installed in the new house I will be doing so probably for a good, long while.  Since the air freshener challenge, I haven't plugged in my Sentsy (although I've been tempted).  The candlelit dinner challenge was tough.  It's hard to safely put candles on a tiny table, in a tiny apartment, with three kids vying for a spot to sit.  I will give that challenge another go after we move and have more room to stretch.  Now, on to this weeks challenge.

Week 5 Challenge - Say bye-bye to your microwave.
Try it for at least a week.  This one's a toughie, but I know you can do it!

We're stepping it up a notch here.  Sure not using your microwave sounds like it would be a huge inconvenience, but once you get used to it, it's not so bad.  To see how hard this challenge would be, I stopped using my microwave about a week ago.  I use the oven or a griddle on the stove top to heat up leftovers.  Food tastes better when it's NOT microwaved and it's one more appliance that you can kiss goodbye.

My hubby hasn't been as on-board with the whole no microwave thing, but he's tolerating it.  He will quickly get used to going without one, because we don't (and won't) have one at the new house.  Just another baby step to going off-grid.  One of the biggest pluses of no microwave is not having to clean it!

  1. Hi Christina,
I did without a microwave about twenty years ago, we lived in an old ranch house having a microwave was not in the budget for a rodeo family back then. I use to heat leftovers for my young children then in a small saucepan over the stove, sometimes i would but one smaller pan over a pot of water in a larger pan, sorta like a double boiler method. It's all i had for a few years. I think i can do it again.... Thanks for challenge......Good luck

  2. That's great...We have a microwave but I'm not sure why we even keep it around. LOL! We NEVER use it and it just takes up counter space. :)

  3. Here's something funny....we lived for 7 months once without a microwave. I fared pretty well...only grumbled a few times. My husband at the time and my grown daughter that comes by often...you would've thought I cut off one of their arms. LOL Now that I have one again, it gets used MAYBE three times a week....
