Off-Grid Challege Week 6

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...er, post.

Week 6 Challenge - Off-Grid Lawn Care

I have missed my Off-Grid Challenge posts, so to make it up I am doing one that will really challenge you.  This week we are going off-grid in the yard!  That's right folks, nothing that requires electricity or gas for at least one week.  Lets step back in time and visit our solution to off-grid yard care...

Oh yes, I did go there!  This is not however your grandmother's rotary mower.  This baby is easy to push and cuts grass better than I ever though it would be able to.  The downside, it doesn't cut tall grass very well because it can't catch it in the blades.  Below is a picture of some of the grass cut and uncut.  You may need to click on it to enlarge it.

So what are some other options for keeping the grass in check?  Well there's the ever trusty goat on a rope (or a horse or cow).  You could also try a scythe.  Now I have never used one, but I would love to give it a go.  With one tool you could harvest grain and keep your grass trimmed.  Finally you could go with my favorite option, and that is an au naturel yard.  Who has time to mow anyways?

  1. I watched a really neat video online of a scythe in use. This particular one was made specifically to your height and arm length (i believe) it looked like it was relatively easy to use and pretty effective.
Can you imagine taking down your hay with that...then having to pitch it into the barn?
Kudos to you for no gas powered motors in the yard.
I'm trying to convince the Honey to do this... he isn't having any of it.
