I had posted previously about how we were doing our garden soil differently this year, Garden Soil. So far I am thrilled with the results.
In the past three weeks I have only spent about 20 minutes weeding. There are weeds all around the garden, but not where we layered the soil. My soil still tests great, and the plants are thriving. Yesterday I added some partially decomposed pine needles and wood bark that was laying around the base of some trees.
My plan is to cover the entire garden area with some type of organic mulch. This should help retain moisture, prevent weeds, and protect and enrich the soil below. Because this mulch is already partially decomposed I shouldn't have to worry about any nitrogen deficiencies.
Here's a view of my little strawberry patch. Please ignore the grass growing up around the rocks. Our weed eater is on the fritz and until the grass and weeds start to invade inside the rocks, I'm not going to worry too much about it.
