More Than You Can Handle

One of the most common quotes I hear amongst my friends whenever someone is facing something tough is:

"God never gives you more than you can handle."

I don't believe that this is truth.  I know from experience that God does indeed give us more than we can handle.  We are pushed past the edge, broken, and lost.  We were never promised that life would be easy and without pain.  He did, however, promise that we would not have to walk alone.

Where this quote is wrong is the "you".  We as humans, are weak.  It's God that makes us strong.  He gives us more than we can handle so that we would turn to him for strength.

When we are dealt something that we can't handle on our own, and don't turn to God, that's when we fall apart.

Perhaps a better quote to use would be:

"If God brings you to it, HE will bring you through it."

Isaiah 41:10    fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

  1. Completely agree with you. I actually hate that "He'll never give you more than you can handle" line... Particularly when certain people of my acquaintance say it in their pretending-to-comfort-mode, when I know I'll feel even worse when they are finally done talking to me.

Can you tell it is a pet peeve with me?
