After a week of chopping ice that was getting to be 6 inches thick, I decided that we had to figure out some way to keep the stock tank from freezing so fast. A water heater wasn't an option because it uses electricity. Something solar immediately came to mind, and Nathan and I set to searching the web for ideas.
On the Build it Solar website we found exactly what we were looking for. They have a fantastic how-to article with lots of pictures. They even had a nice performance graph showing how well the tank worked.
Our solar tank was a bit different from theirs. We used our stock tank instead of just a liner.

We are supposed to get snow tonight, so we shall see how well this works. Even if it just keeps the ice from getting so thick I'll be happy. My finger is still bruised from when I caught it between the axe handle and the rim of the tank at full swing.
