Oil Lamps

Someone asked about my oil lamps that I talked about in a previous post, and I thought that I would just answer them here.
Q 1: What kinds are they?  The larger one is an antique Giant, that I got at an antique mall.  The other I think came from Wal-Mart.
Q 2:  Do they produce good light?  These two lamps are the only oil lamps I've ever used, so I can't compare them to an Aladdin for example. Would I want them for everyday use?  No.  Good for power outage?  You bet.  I would like to get several more, but I'm still researching what will work best for us.
I just love the soft glow of an old lamp, don't you?

  1. My husband loves old oil lambs. He has picked up several over the years. They are great in a power outage. They also add some country charm to any room :)

  2. I have a few cheap ones from Walmart. They are good for power outages just as long as the kids know to use caution around them. They are better than using candles.

  3. Those are so wonderful!
I wouldn't want to have to use them everyday. But, we use ours in a pinch! They are nice to have on hand for emergencies. It helps to have the oil too.
I also think there are versions you can make with veg-oil as well. But, I've never tried it.

I'm getting my supplies together right now to make some of my electric lamps into battery operated. I found a neat tutorial online. Our house has limited electric outlets since it's battery operated lamps would be perfect!
I want one for my bedroom and my new office space.

I hope to do a post about it soon.

  4. This is a little freaky actually. Only last night as I lay in bed I was looking up on my phone about how to make oil lamps. :D How wonderful to wake up to a post on them.
These are the 2 links I found:
and both use vegetable oil. Olive specifically. :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I love hearing from my readers.
