"A weed is just a plant growing in the wrong place, at the wrong time."

They get a bad rep, those poor weeds.  They are sprayed, pulled, smothered and burned.  Every gardener works hard towards a weed free garden.  I know there has been many discussions in our home about how to deal with weeds in the pasture.  But surely they are there for a reason...right?  Why would God put something on this Earth just to cause us aggravation?

The more research I do, the more I realize that I am overlooking a gardening resource.  Weeds can tell us about the condition of our soil.  They can prevent erosion, bring up nutrients, and conserve moisture.  I would love to share an article that I came across that I actually printed out.

Weeds: Don't Shoot the Messenger

Fantastic reading.  I hope that you get as much useful information out of it as I did.

  1. Timely post! We started eating the weeds this year - The lambsquarters came up before the spinach, and I used them in place of the spinach til we had that. Then we made pesto with the invasive garlic mustard. Certain members of the family like the weeds better than the garden veggies!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I love hearing from my readers.
